No Sides Taken

The relationship is the client. Neither of you is the problem. The pattern between you is.

Culturally Affirming

You won't have to explain your culture, your families, or the world you move through before the real work can start.

Beneath the Argument

We look at what the fight is protecting: the fear, the longing, the need that isn't getting said.

Grounded in Research

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is a research-based approach to couples work.

Jaimee is the founder of Transcend Therapy and leads its work with couples. She is trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an approach that looks past who's right and toward what's happening between you. Her focus is the pattern you're both caught in: getting curious about it together, without shame and without blame.

Expect honesty, warmth, and conversations that go deep, along with practical things to try between sessions. Neither of you will be cast as the problem. You'll both be taken seriously, as two whole people.

Culturally Affirming Care

60 or 75 min · Self-pay

Supporting couples of color.

What happens outside your relationship comes home with you. Pressure at work, family expectations, being the first or the only one in the room. It's hard to be soft with each other when you've both been braced all day.

Here, you don't have to perform, code-switch, or overexplain yourselves to be understood. Your culture, your families, and the systems you move through are part of the conversation from the first session.

That includes interracial and intercultural couples, where part of the work is understanding what each of you carries that the other hasn't had to.

What Brings Couples In

60 or 75 min · Self-pay

Reconnect & deepen your connection.

You care about each other, but something is off. You can't get on the same page.

  • The same argument on repeat. Different topic, same ending. One of you pushes, the other pulls away, and nothing gets settled.
  • Alone, together. You run the household well. You can't remember the last time you felt like more than co-managers.
  • Two full plates. Two demanding careers, and not much left for each other by the end of the day. You're both holding it together everywhere except here.
  • A big transition. A new baby, a move, a career change, blending families, caring for a parent. The relationship that worked before doesn't quite fit the life you have now.
  • Before you commit. Engaged or getting serious, and wanting to talk through money, family, faith, and roles before they turn into fights.

What to Expect

What working together looks like.

  • A free 15-minute consultation. A relaxed conversation about what's bringing you in and whether this is the right fit. One of you can take the call, as long as your partner knows about it and is open to the work.
  • The first few sessions. We start with a session together, then one individual session with each of you, then come back together to set the direction.
  • Weekly to start. Sessions are 60 or 75 minutes, once a week at the beginning. The longer session gives two people more room to finish what they open. Change needs momentum. As things steady, we space sessions out.
  • How long it takes. Most couples work with us for a year or more. Changing how you reach for each other takes time, and we'd rather be honest about that from the start.

How It Works

The argument is rarely about the argument.

Most couples arrive focused on what they fight about: the dishes, the in-laws, the money, the phone. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) looks at the cycle underneath. One of you reaches, the other retreats. One gets louder, the other goes quiet. Neither of you is the problem. The cycle is.

Seeing the cycle. Saying the harder thing. Making it yours.

We map what happens between you when things go wrong, and what each of you is feeling underneath it. You practice telling each other what sits under the anger or the silence, and being heard when you do. Then you take a new way of reaching for each other into the conversations that used to go sideways: money, family, intimacy, time.

This is about rebuilding trust and emotional connection. It is not about choosing sides.

Why virtual therapy for couples?

Getting two schedules into one room is often the hardest part of couples therapy. Virtual sessions take out the commute, the childcare, and the race across town from two different jobs.

Together, from home.

You meet from your own home, in the place where your relationship actually happens. Being in the same room on one screen works best. If work or travel keeps you apart, you can join from two places, as long as you're both in Massachusetts during the session.

We serve couples across Greater Boston and all of Massachusetts — including Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy?

EFCT is an approach to couples therapy built on how people bond. Instead of refereeing each disagreement, it looks at the cycle you get caught in and the feelings underneath it. The goal is for each of you to be able to reach for the other and get a response.

Do we both need to be at every session?

Apart from one individual session with each of you early on, yes. Couples therapy works on what happens between you, so sessions are with both partners.

What if my partner isn't sure about therapy?

That's common, and it doesn't rule you out. One of you is often more ready than the other. The free consultation is a low-pressure way for a hesitant partner to ask questions and get a feel for the work before deciding.

How often do we meet, and for how long?

Sessions are 60 or 75 minutes, weekly to start. Meeting weekly builds the momentum that change needs. As things steady, we space sessions out. Most couples work with us for a year or more.

Does couples therapy work online?

Yes. You'll need a private space, a steady connection, and ideally one screen where you can both be seen. We prefer partners to be in the same room, and joining from two places in Massachusetts works when that isn't possible. Many couples find it easier to open up at home than in an unfamiliar office.

Do you take insurance for couples therapy?

Couples therapy is self-pay: $250 for a 60-minute session or $300 for 75 minutes. Insurance covers treatment for one person's diagnosis, and in couples therapy the relationship is the client. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and a superbill is available on request.

Do we have to be married?

No. We work with couples who are dating, engaged, married, or long-term partners, including couples preparing for marriage or another major commitment.

Do you work with interracial couples?

Yes. Interracial and intercultural couples are welcome here. Differences in culture, race, and family background are often part of what couples are navigating, and they are part of the conversation from the first session.

Is couples therapy always the right place to start?

Not always. It works best when both of you are willing to take part, even if one of you is more hesitant. It isn't the right starting point if either of you doesn't feel safe at home or is afraid of what will happen after you speak honestly in a session. If that's your situation, reach out to us on your own and we'll help you find the right support. You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788.
